Study hours, cumulative totals and from-beginner timings

Universities often estimate about 250 hours of study per CEFR level; full-time immersion is typically faster — at CEL the average is about 10 weeks. That difference is the reason students study abroad: in San Diego, English continues after class — in shops, at the beach, in your shared apartment.

On average, students need approx. 10 weeks of consistent study to complete one CEFR level.

Most bookings target a single level or exam — but if you’re starting from the beginning, the per-level averages add up like this:

Cumulative totals

Starting from Scratch — How Long to Reach Each Level?

Target level

Total from beginner

A2

Approx. 17 weeks

B1

Approx. 27 weeks

B2

Roughly 35–40 weeks — about one academic year

C1

Approx. 48 weeks

Sums of per-level averages — individual pace varies.

Starting from beginner, students typically reach B1 in about 27 weeks and B2 in roughly 35–40 weeks — about one academic year. From beginner to B2 takes roughly 35–40 weeks — about one academic year. Reaching C1 from beginner takes approximately 48 weeks — the sum of CEL’s per-level averages.

True zero beginners are rare in study abroad — CEL beginners are typically false beginners with some prior knowledge, and they start any Monday like every other level. “Courses start any Monday, at every level from A1 to C2.”

How Long Are You Allowed to Study English in the USA?

In the US market, how long you want to stay and how long you are allowed to stay are the same decision. The route you enter on sets your maximum study duration:

Entry routes

How Long Each Route Lets You Stay

Length of stay

Visa route

Course

Up to 12 weeks

ESTA (Visa Waiver — eligible nationalities)

GE20, or GE23 for more lessons per week

Typically up to 6 months

B1/B2 visitor visa

GE20 or GE23

Longer stays / 24+ lessons per week

F-1 student visa

GE24 or GE28

You can study English in the USA for up to 12 weeks on ESTA (if eligible); courses of 24 or more lessons per week require an F-1 visa. A B1/B2 visitor visa typically allows English study for up to 6 months.

CEL’s General English 23 (23.75 lessons per week) stays below the 24-lesson F-1 threshold — more lessons per week, still on ESTA.

CEL provides course guidance, not visa advice — eligibility and duration are decided by U.S. authorities. travel.state.gov

Your starting level

Higher levels take slightly longer: refining complex arguments at C1 is slower work than learning everyday phrases at A1. The ladder above shows the typical range — approx. 8 to 11 weeks per level.

More weekly lessons compress calendar time. CEL offers GE20 (20 lessons/week), GE23 (23.75 lessons/week — more lessons, still on ESTA), GE24 (24 lessons/week, F-1) and GE28 (28 lessons/week, F-1). Compare weekly prices on the cost page.

What Do You Achieve in 4, 8, 12 or 20+ Weeks?

Weeks 1–4

Speaking confidence and everyday fluency grow

A 4-week course improves fluency and confidence, but is usually not enough to complete a full CEFR level. Expect faster, more comfortable speaking — and a real immersion experience.

Bookable on ESTA (eligible nationalities) or B1/B2 visitor visa

Weeks 5–8

Conversations get noticeably easier

Solid, noticeable progress — many students complete a level that started before arrival or get most of the way through one. A strong choice if the summer is your window.

Weeks 9–12

Twelve weeks is the most popular course length — typically enough to complete one full CEFR level. It fits inside the 12-week ESTA window and leaves margin to complete a full level.

How Do You Structure a Longer Stay?

On a longer stay you don’t repeat the same course — you build a pathway. CEL San Diego’s elective areas are Career Development Skills, Academic Skills, TOEFL Exam Preparation and Cambridge Exam Preparation.

TOEFL and Cambridge exam electives run for up to 8 weeks; most exam students start with General English and switch to exam preparation later in their stay. Cambridge is more mixed: higher-level candidates sometimes book only the 8-week Cambridge block, others start with General English and switch.

Same intensity, same price.

Courses of the same intensity cost the same — you can switch from General English to TOEFL preparation or Career Development mid-stay at no extra cost.

Is a Short Course Worth It?

Yes — if you expect the right things from it. A 2–4 week course builds speaking confidence, refreshes rusty skills and gives you a real immersion experience. It usually does not complete a full CEFR level, because a level covers more ground than a few weeks of lessons can — measurable academic progression needs approx. 10+ weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Approx. 10 weeks per CEFR level; even 4 weeks brings noticeable speaking gains. Where you start and how many lessons per week you take set your exact pace.

Up to 12 weeks on ESTA if eligible; a B1/B2 visitor visa typically allows up to 6 months. Courses of 24+ lessons per week always require an F-1 visa. See the visa table and our F-1 visa page.

Yes — for most students, 12 weeks is enough to complete one full CEFR level, which is when progress becomes clearly noticeable. It is also the most popular course length at CEL San Diego.

Extending your course is easy in-school — but whether you can extend your stay depends on how you entered the USA. An ESTA stay cannot be extended beyond 90 days — students planning more than 12 weeks need a B1/B2 visitor visa (typically up to 6 months) or an F-1 visa. Plan your intended duration before you enter the USA.

Yes — courses start any Monday from 1 week; expect fluency and confidence gains, not a full level.

From B1 to B2 takes about 10 weeks of full-time study on average.

Yes — weekly tuition drops at 7, 13 and 20 weeks. See the cost page.

The exam electives run for up to 8 weeks. Most TOEFL students start with General English and switch to exam preparation later in their stay, so total stays are usually longer than 8 weeks. Higher-level Cambridge candidates sometimes book only the 8-week exam block.

In weeks per level, yes — slightly. Early levels cover high-frequency language you use every day, so progress feels fast (approx. 8–9 weeks for A1–A2). Moving from upper-intermediate to advanced takes longer (approx. 10–11 weeks for B2–C1) because you are refining complex arguments, precision and range rather than adding basics. That’s normal — it’s the plateau every learner meets, and structured classes are what push you through it.

Students who live in English progress faster. In a homestay you negotiate daily life with your hosts in English; in a shared student apartment you live with other internationals whose only common language is English. Both extend immersion beyond the classroom — choose by lifestyle, not by fear of speaking. See housing options.

An academic year is roughly 35–40 weeks — enough to go from beginner to B2, or from intermediate level through C1 with time for exam preparation. Stays of this length run on an F-1 student visa with GE24 or GE28, and university-bound students can continue into the Pathway Program USA. Weekly tuition drops at 7, 13 and 20 weeks, so academic-year stays also have the lowest weekly rates. See the F-1 visa page.

There is no single definition of fluency. Many students consider B2 fluent for work, travel and daily life, while C1 is typically needed for university study or professional writing. From beginner to B2 takes roughly 35–40 weeks — about one academic year. Reaching C1 from beginner takes approximately 48 weeks — the sum of CEL’s per-level averages.

Both CEL cities teach the same methodology with the same approx. 10-weeks-per-level average — the difference is the setting and the paperwork. San Diego offers up to 12 visa-free weeks on ESTA (eligible nationalities; B1/B2 visitor visa otherwise) and TOEFL preparation for US universities; Vancouver suits students targeting Canada.
