WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE?

It'll come as no surprise to hear that children learn most things faster than adults, and language is definitely one of those things. According to recent studies, the best time for children to master English with native-speaker proficiency is before the age of 10.

Of course, that's not to say that people over the age of 18 can't master the language effectively as well, just that past this age it becomes more challenging. Furthermore, studying at the right time of day can further speed up the learning process.

Consider the following:

According to multiple studies, most students are at their peak learning performance between 9 am and 11 am, once they're fully awake.

Learning ability tends to be reduced during the midday hours but climbs back again during the early afternoon.

It peaks again between 4 pm and 6 pm but declines afterwards.

After 9 pm, most students will experience an additional decline in performance.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD I STUDY A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?

Short answer: as many as possible. Long answer: in an ideal world, we would all be able to devote anywhere between 45 and 90 minutes (or more) per day to our English-learning efforts. Preferably, this time would be divided across multiple resources and activities.

Unfortunately, maintaining this kind of pace simply isn't practical for most of us, at least not if we're on our own. For this reason, it's a good idea to enlist at a reputable English language school that uses small classes, state-of-the-art classrooms, seasoned teachers, and has a tried-and-true curriculum designed to facilitate learning.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE?

If they work hard, a beginner can become fluent enough to be able to work in an English-speaking workplace in a year. However, this can still vary greatly from student to student.

How long it takes you to learn English depends on numerous factors:

  • Your current knowledge of the language
  • Whether you're based in an English-speaking area
  • The languages you're already fluent in
  • The level of English you want to achieve (upper-intermediate is what most people need)
  • How much and how hard you study
  • How talented you are when it comes to learning languages
  • The amount of practice you put in

What is the most effective daily schedule for learning English?

Optimizing your daily schedule for learning English can significantly improve outcomes, with studies suggesting that peak learning performance occurs between 9 AM and 11 AM, and again from 4 PM to 6 PM. Children under 10 generally master English with native-speaker proficiency faster than adults, but older learners can still achieve fluency by studying strategically. Daily immersion and consistent practice are key for all age groups. It takes anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes of dedicated study each day to make significant progress. The total time required to learn English varies widely depending on factors like your starting proficiency, daily study commitment, the target fluency level, and natural language aptitude. Becoming proficient enough for an English-speaking workplace can take a beginner about a year of hard work, especially if they are based in an English-speaking area like San Diego, California. Engaging with experienced teachers and a structured curriculum at a reputable English language school in San Diego can further accelerate this process. English, with its vast vocabulary and complex spelling rules, presents unique challenges for learners of all ages. However, these obstacles can be overcome with the right approach and dedicated support. For children, studies indicate that mastering English to a native-speaker level is most effective before the age of 10. While adults might face a steeper curve, effective study habits and choosing the right time of day for concentrated effort can bridge this gap.

How many hours a day should you dedicate to learning a language?

While dedicating as much time as possible is ideal for effective language acquisition, a realistic goal is 45 to 90 minutes per day, split across different resources and activities. This consistent daily effort is more practical for most people than attempting long, sporadic study sessions. A structured environment, such as an English language school, provides the necessary tools and support to maintain this pace. For example, the College of English Language offers a variety of English courses designed to maximize learning efficiency through small classes, modern classrooms, and experienced teachers. These programs include General English and specialized options like English Plus TOEFL Exam Preparation, all tailored to help students make significant progress.

What factors influence the time it takes to learn English?

The time it takes to learn English is highly individual, influenced by several critical factors. Your existing knowledge of the language is a major determinant; beginners will naturally take longer than those with some prior exposure. Whether you are living in an English-speaking region, like a student at an English language school in San Diego, California, also plays a significant role in how quickly you acquire fluency, as daily immersion accelerates learning. The languages you already speak can impact learning speed, as some linguistic backgrounds may offer more transferable skills. The level of English you aim to achieve, whether it’s conversational fluency, academic proficiency for university pathway programs, or business English for global careers, will dictate the study duration. Furthermore, your dedication, study habits, and natural aptitude for languages are crucial. Students who commit to regular practice and consistent effort, often guided by experienced instructors, tend to see faster progress. If you are exploring options for learning English in the USA, consider a structured program that supports your specific learning goals.
