Three things set us apart. First, class size — we cap classes at 12 students with an average of 7, while most language schools in Vancouver run 15–17 per class, which limits speaking time and individual feedback. Second, location — our boutique campus near Coal Harbour puts you within walking distance of the waterfront, Stanley Park and downtown, rather than in a large institutional setting. Third, experience — CEL is part of a language education group with over 45 years of welcoming international students, so our teaching methods, student support and accreditations reflect long-standing expertise rather than a recent setup.
Class sizes are intentionally small to ensure personal attention and faster progress. On average:

Stories and advice from our students, written to give you a real feel for studying with CEL.
Choosing a language school in San Diego means immersing yourself in daily conversation practice at our accredited campus in Pacific Beach. Located just five minutes from the ocean, the College of English Language (CEL) operates 14 modern classrooms equipped with smart TVs. We help international students learn English in the United States effectively. Whether you are coming to San Diego, California for a short vacation or a long-term academic pathway, our center provides a supportive environment focused on real communication. Students benefit from the oversight of the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). This ensures high-quality teaching standards across all programs. By keeping average class sizes strictly at seven students, with a maximum of 12, every participant speaks during every lesson. Teachers learn your name immediately. They assess your progress from the first week. You can easily transfer course progress between our network locations in Los Angeles, California and Vancouver, British Columbia if your study plans expand.
Students who attend our language school typically fall into three distinct groups. Working adults often use a tourist visa or an ESTA for short stays. Longer-term learners enter on an F-1 student visa to prepare for university admission or a career change. Parents and professionals taking a sabbatical make up the final group. Most arrive at a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1 level or above. The student body regularly includes participants from Europe, Latin America, East Asia, and the Middle East. This diverse mix keeps the classroom lively. It forces everyone to use English as their common bridge.
CEL San Diego is the College of English Language's accredited California campus in Pacific Beach, San Diego, five minutes from the Pacific Ocean. It runs small classes year-round for international students who want to learn English in the United States with daily conversation practice rather than lecture-style theory. The school is part of CEL's three-campus network across San Diego, Santa Monica, and Vancouver, Canada, so course progress and accommodation can transfer between locations during a longer stay.
Pacific Beach is a residential beach neighborhood with cafes, surf schools, and a long boardwalk that students use after class. CEL San Diego sits inside this neighborhood, not in a downtown office tower, which means most students walk to school and meet classmates locally during evenings and weekends. Class sizes stay deliberately small so that every student speaks during every lesson, and teachers know each student's name and progress level from the first week.
Students who come to CEL San Diego usually fall into one of three groups: working adults using a tourist visa or ESTA for short stays, longer-term students on an F-1 student visa preparing for university or a career change, and parents or professionals on sabbatical. Most arrive at a CEFR B1 level or above. The student body comes from across Europe, Latin America, East Asia, and the Middle East, which keeps the classroom language English by default since no two students share the same first language.
Many students extend their stay or move directly into one of CEL's specialized tracks. The English Plus Surfing course combines morning lessons with afternoon ocean sessions and is popular for students who came to San Diego specifically for the California lifestyle. Others continue into Cambridge or TOEFL preparation as a route into United States universities. Accommodation throughout the stay is handled through CEL's homestay or shared apartments in Pacific Beach, so students don't have to find housing on their own when they arrive.
